Our Project Development Objective (PDO) is to increase the implementation of sustainable landscape management practices in targeted watersheds in northern Nigeria and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management.
Targeted Impact of ACReSAL Project
The ACReSAL Project will help restore 1 million hectares of degraded land in the northern part of the country. This will contribute to the Federal Government of Nigeria’s objective/commitment of restoring four million hectares of degraded land set for broader landscape restoration by 2030. The project will also help reduce the vulnerability of millions of the extreme poor people in northern Nigeria, strengthening their own role in line with achieving environmental sustainability.
The project will support scaling-up sustainable landscape management practices in northern Nigeria through strategic investments addressing natural resource degradation through an integrated ecosystem approach, building the capacity of institutions towards risk reduction and responding to climate variability, and generating information and knowledge to improve sustainable land and water management practices in Nigeria as a whole, and northern Nigeria in particular.
The ACReSAL project aligns with the Federal Government of Nigeria in restoring ONE million hectares degraded land by 2030
Afforestation and reforestation restore forests, improve soil health, and combat climate change by planting trees in degraded areas.
Sustainable agriculture uses methods like agroforestry and organic farming to enhance soil fertility, reduce erosion, and increase crop yields.
Watershed management conserves water, reduces erosion, and improves water quality to support ecosystems and water supplies.
Land use planning optimizes land use while minimizing environmental degradation, balancing development with conservation.
Climate-smart agriculture involves training farmers in climate-resilient practices like drought-tolerant crops, efficient irrigation, and integrated pest management to adapt to changing weather patterns.
Water harvesting focuses on building structures like dams and ponds to store rainwater for irrigation and domestic use, ensuring a reliable water supply.
Early warning systems are developed to alert communities about impending climate-related disasters, helping them prepare and reduce the impact of such events.
Capacity building involves training government officials and community leaders on climate change adaptation and mitigation to enhance local response efforts.
Policy development supports the creation and implementation of climate-resilient policies and regulations that guide sustainable practices.
Monitoring and evaluation focus on establishing systems to track project progress and assess their impact, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement.
Rapid assessment and response involve quickly evaluating disaster-affected areas to identify immediate needs and prioritize assistance.
Emergency relief focuses on delivering essential supplies, such as food, water, and shelter, to communities in need.
Disaster recovery and reconstruction support the rebuilding of damaged infrastructure and the restoration of livelihoods to help communities recover and rebuild.

“Before ACReSAL came to our community, accessing clean water was a daily struggle. We relied on distant streams that dried up during the dry season. Now, with the boreholes provided by ACReSAL, clean water is just a few steps away. It has transformed our lives, improved our health, and given us more time to focus on our farms and families.”
“The training and support from ACReSAL have revolutionized the way we farm. They taught us better irrigation methods and provided us with tools and seeds suited for our environment. This year, my harvest was the best it’s ever been. My family and I are now more hopeful for the future.”
“Flooding used to be a major problem for us. It destroyed our crops and made our roads impassable. Since ACReSAL constructed drainage systems and reinforced riverbanks in our area, we haven’t experienced any floods. Our community feels safer, and we can now plan for the rainy season without fear.”
